Infamous Bittorrent tracker Demonoid dances again
By Triston McIntyre
There’s a dance-off on the internet, and its between big name torrent trackers and the media protection groups. Demonoid, once one of the largest trackers on the internet, was doing a masterful jig trying to evade those groups, but eventually it missed a step and was forced off the internet; however, with a little work and a change in management, Demonoid is back up on the table jigging with the best of ‘em.
According to WebTVWire, previous site administrator Deimon isn’t at the tracker’s helm anymore, but has relinquished control to another admin. Part of keeping a low profile as a questionable tracker site is taking necessary steps to make sure certain individuals aren’t contributing to the site’s image, and it seems Deimon could have been a large part of that.
For those who might be involved in the torrent community, many know Demonoid to be a very exclusive torrent site, only allowing new members to join upon invite or during a very specific and short block of time every Friday. For those folks who were members and are hoping that they won’t have to suffer through trying to get back into the tracker site, everyone who had accounts before the site was shut down should be able to gain full access.
Obviously, there are a lot of readers who aren’t involved in the torrent community, and might be wondering what all the hype about a single tracker getting back online is all about. As torrenting is both morally and legally questionable, there are quite a few sites of different quality and size; like The Pirate Bay, Demonoid was known for having a large group of seeders (people who contribute to the distribution of material, and don’t just “leech”), as well as a huge index of files.
That also explains why sites like Demonoid and The Pirate Bay catch most of the heat online from the big media protection groups. Score one in the books for Demonoid, at least for now.
