Verizon cuts smartphone data plans for HTC Touch release
Verizon will cut the price of its relatively expensive smartphone data plan in conjunction with the release of the HTC Touch and the Motorola Q9c, a business version of the Q9m. This is, of course, an obvious response to AT&T’s iPhone epidemic.
Currently, Verizon boasts a much better network over AT&T, but the GSM carrier tends to offer phones that can’t help but make Verizon’s offerings look shameful. Mix in AT&T’s cheaper data plans, and you can see why the company’s still around despite Verizon’s faster, stronger, and more reliable network.
Well, Verizon isn’t one to get pushed without pushing back, leading the company to reduce its $45/month smartphone data plan to match AT&T’s $30/month data plan, says PhoneNews. The new price should take effect this week — likely tomorrow. Verizon also plans to release the HTC Touch and Q9c this month, two key weapons in the wireless carrier’s fight against AT&T and the iPhone.
Though the new devices and cheaper plans may not be enough to one-up AT&T yet, Verizon plans to ditch its advanced CDMA network for a better 4G GSM standard called Long Term Evolution, or LTE, by 2013. Several non-Verizon phones (and other devices) should function on the new network, finally giving AT&T some real competition in the gadget arena.
