Mobion fuel cells double your gadget fun
How often have you started to take pictures with your rarely used camera only to find that it was out of energy? How often have you been flipping through your PDA/smartphone calendar trying to find directions to your next appointment, only to have your device pick that time to develop a low battery. How many portable chargers do you have so that you never have to worry about portable devices running out of energy?
Well, those days may be gone with Mobion’s new methanol powered fuel cells. Mechanical Technology Incorporated (MTI) Micro has revealed the new Mobion fuel cells for cameras, mobile phones and mp3 players at the 4th International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo. The cameral fuel cell is embedded in a typical grip type power pack that has twice the power of a conventional grip power pack. The best part of all, is that you simply add more Methanol to the fuel cell and it is instantly recharged and ready to go. Just think, freedom from the endless search for power outlets and a spare 8 hours to recharge! There is the downside of having to carry enough methanol to power up all your gadgets.
Also on display were Mobion’s external power pack chargers for cell phones, point and shoot cameras, mp3 players, smart phones and more. Again, no need for an outlet, just methanol. No longer will anyone have to worry about running out of juice for their cell phone when they get stranded, they can just use the Mobion external charger and have all the time they need to direct help to their location.
Mobion is also developing fuel cells that will be embedded in new smart phones and other gadgets. The age of lithium ion batteries may be drawing to a close. This would be the first rechargeable power source that didn’t require outlets, special chargers, or long periods of time.
Alas, the fuel cells being shown at the Expo are only prototypes. The company does not expect to be able to provide these fuel cells until 2009.
