Asus EeePC 900 landing in US on May 12
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Those of you who have owned the original EeePC may have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next model, the EeePC 900 which has a larger 9″ display, faster processor, more memory, choice of operating system and larger SSD (solid state drive).
Even if you didn’t have the first EeePC you have no doubt heard of those who have and probably came across information that pointed to the new model and you were wise to wait. The new model is far superior to the EeePC model 701. Besides the most obvious difference (larger display), it no longer has the processor speed limitation, though it still makes use of a Celeron, it operates at the full 900MHz; most EeePC model 701s were limited to 633MHz.
Later model EeePC 900s are rumored to have Intel Atom processors in the line up which I would say is a bit better than a Celeron so if you can be a bit more patient, wait to see if that actually does happen.
But for now here is what you will get with the EeePC 900 according to Notebook Review,
Display: 8.9″ 1024 x 600
Color: Pearl White, Black
CPU: Intel Mobile CPU
Chipset: Intel Mobile Chipset
Memory: DDR II 1GB
Graphics: Intel UMA
Storage:
- Linux sku:20GB (4GB on board + 16GB flash module)
XP sku:12GB (4GB on board + 8GB flash module)
Web Cam: 1.3 M
Dimension: 8.86″(W) x 6.69″(D) x .79″mm~1.33″(H)
Weight (kg): 2.18 lbs
It doesn’t really seem fair that the Linux version gets a larger flash module than the XP version but this could have been done to keep the cost similar between models since it no doubt costs more to include XP and by reducing the size of the storage module this offsets that cost; I can’t explain the price disparity, though, except to say more storage costs more.
The EeePC 900 with 12GB of storage and Windows XP runs $549 over at Allasus and the Linux version with 20GB of storage runs $569. Both are currently available for pre-order in black or white colors.

I think they messed up with this model. Small and light. Smallish screen. And a short battery life.
Why would anyone get this instead of a plethora of notebooks with 15″ screens and hard drives?

Ken, you miss the point. I’ve tried lugging around the so called notebooks with 15 or even 14″ screens and it’s no picnic… really bulky and HEAVY. The small size and light weight, coupled with the durability resulting from the use of the SSD (you don’t have to treat it like you were carrying a carton of eggs) really gives it portability and mobility… coupled with the decent processing power, gives you something you can always bring with you

Please tell me, on different websites i read that this computer has a 1.7ghz CPU. Could you please confirm that it isn’t true, that the laptop is just using a 900 mhz CPU?
