Star Trek tech, holodecks in your living room sooner than you think

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Untitled-3 Think the idea of a holodeck, first shown in Star Trek: The Next Generation is so far fetched, well think again?  If the Fitness@Home project has anything to say about it, the first baby steps towards it have already been taken.  You won’t be romping through Sherwood Forest pretending to be Robin Hood any time soon but it may get there, some day.

Cnet reports that the Fitness@Home is the first step toward a simulated reality system.  It is currently limited to outdoor training programs which uses a stepper, a specialized projector and an oxygen mask that can deliver regulated scented air for an immersive experience.  Perhaps a next step would be to add temperature regulation to it as well.

As for the technical aspects (PDF Warning),

“Ability to combine several
projectors

Projection on surfaces of all
shapes and sizes

High resolution: Ultra HD
format
4096 x 2048 pixels realisable
with one PC. Higher resolution
can be gained through
the combination of several PCs.

The video speed can be controlled
by means of the exercise
machine”

It’s a start but I’d be just as fine with being able to use it to play a game of COD4 or FEAR or any other modern first person shooter/action game.  Or how about using it to play Bridge Commander?  I’m patiently awaiting the sequel to that game, though I don’t suspect it will actually happen.
