Dell officially announces “Dell 500″ laptop for developing markets
Remeber that 8.9-inch laptop Dell was speaking of a while back, well, this is not it. It’s still shrouded in a bit of mystery with no official specs but there’s nothing wrong with a good healthy dose of speculation. Dell won’t be left out on the Atom action supposedly to be offered by the Asus EeePC later this year so that’s at least one thing to look forward to.
Then there will of course be a 8.9-inch display, probably be a webcam and it’s said to run Windows XP Home or Ubuntu Linux which suggest the usage of an Atom processor.
EFYTimes says the only other details available are an 8-in-1 card reader and direct multi-media playback buttons probably exactly like it offers on all its other laptops. Now, there is a little problem, for the time being it is developing the product for India.
The President of Dell APACS, Paul-Henri Ferrand, said,
“India is the fastest growing market for Dell worldwide and laptops have emerged as the fastest growing form factor. In fact, Dell has decided to focus on laptops worldwide as a strategic growth priority, and the start of laptop production in India is an important part of our plans.”
As far as price, it will run about $600 which sounds about right (or that’s Rs 24,500 if you come from that part of the world). Dell should pay attention because the rest of the world would like to have the option of buying that laptop as well. Not that we don’t have other options like the HP Mini-Note or the EeePC or even the ECS 10GIL.
[Update:] The Dell 500 IS NOT the 8.9-inch laptop, please see our updated post.
