U.S. Military receives special OLED screens
The U.S. Military has new hi-tech gadgets to help them in the field. The new OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays use very little power and can be switched into a special “stealth mode” where only the screen can only be seen by night vision goggles.
The military OLED displays developed by Universal Display, are flexible and can be rolled up having been mounted on a special foil background. These displays are limited to green or infrared output. The infrared output allows only night vision wearing personnel to read the screen, thereby allowing the holder of the display to remain hidden. This special screen allows troops to update information regularly while out in the field. They can verify the remaining distance to their target as well ass the location of friendly troops. Thus preventing unfortunate accidents.
Since one of the great features of OLED displays, is its “brilliant illumination”, it is a shame that military personnel are confined to just a choice of green and infrared, neither one anything to write home about. Let me revise that, by having screens that are limited and provide stealth mode viewing, the troops stand a greater chance of being able to write home. They can enjoy the enhanced color on other OLED displays coming out within the next few months.
This new technology is a wonderful addition to troop equipment. The low power consumption will allow the displays to work long after normal LCD displays would need recharging. The light weight and convenient flexibility make it easy to carry, and the specialized viewing modes make it safer for the troops to view in hazardous situations.
The military made a good choice in adopting OLED displays. Let’s hope their rest of their equipment choices are as useful.
