Dell develops an ecological bamboo computer

By Susan Wilson

Dell develops an ecological bamboo computer Dell has designed a beautifully sleek, energy efficient desktop computer.  This bamboo beauty will improve the look of any office and improve your envirogeek cred at the same time.

This bamboo desktop is 81% smaller than other desktops and uses 70% less power.  Not bad for such a little beauty.  The internal specs are not known at this time so it is unclear what chips are incorporated or what other technology has gone into creating this small energy efficient computer.

One thing is clear,  this computer reflects Dell’s “green” commitment.  Since Bamboo grows at a rapid rate almost like kudzu.  Harvesting bamboo for use as computer cases (as well as floors, paneling, clothing, furniture, ad infinitum) will not deplete bamboo in the same way that harvesting trees will.  Since bamboo grows back within weeks since it grows 3 to 4 feet a day, rather than years for other trees.

Dell has also used recycled plastic from a variety of used recyclable containers, further enhancing its commitment to reduce the impact of technology on the environment.  Dell already has computer recycling and plant a tree programs.  It is using more recycled parts and safer materials in their products.  This new desk top takes it one step farther.

A desk top that is 80% smaller, 70% more energy efficient, uses recycled materials, and at a cost between $500 and $700.  The package is certainly worth exploring.  Now if we only knew the actual specs.

Does it come as a Dell laptop? Add a Dell charger, and a lithium ion battery and it is a tiki torch, too.

    2. Ralph:

Ubuntu on Bamboo, what a concept!

No laptop plans so far, but you never know. Add an OLED screen to a hinged solar cell backing and Voila, a very green laptop.
