LOTRO and DDO creator Turbine gets another $40 million in funding
Turbine’s managed to secure another $40 million in venture capital, but has yet to reveal what it intends to do with the extra cash.
Why the buzz about the cash injection? As Turbine’s done pretty well so far with the success of their The Lord of the Rings Online MMO and Dungeons and Dragons Online, there’s speculation they might be launching a new franchise. peHub broke the funding story earlier in the week.
As of press time, Turbine’s raised more than $90 million in total and the latest $40 million’s shown that the companies in good standing with the VCs as a viable prospect. Dean Takahasi of Venturebeat had an interesting interview with Jim Crowley, CEO of Turbine, where he talks about MMOs yet doesn’t quite spill any beans as to where the money is going…
Takahasi’s theory is that Turbine is going to take the MMO fight to the consoles to compete with names like NCSoft and Sony, with possibly LOTRO being the game ported to the platform. It’s an interesting theory that ties into Crowley’s statement that Turbine is “very focused on the topics of accessibility and distribution”. With the Hobbit movie coming soon, it would be a great opportunity to capitalize on the franchise’s huge fanbase and the movie’s surefire appeal to the masses.
Crowley also confirmed that there are a couple of unannounced projects in the works, so expect more on the horizon from Turbine.
