Real Paper goes hi tech
Take your average piece of paper wave a little scientific magic over it and Shazam! 21st century electronic paper displays are created. Even everyday mundane paper can be electrified and morphed into a new super form.
What do you get when you take ink and bond it with “microbial cellulose nano-fiber paper”? You get an electronic RealPaper Display. Of course, there is a bit more to it such as the ink must be “switchable”, and the paper must be “fused” with either an active or passive backplane. The whole combination is then controlled with the same electronics used in LCD displays.
This new paper coming from RealPaper Displays (yes, that really is its name), will be flexible and the cost should be fairly low. Viewing notes, reports, or books on it should have the same visual qualities as reading from a normal unenhanced piece of paper. This means that the display will have a good contrast ratio and a wide viewing angle.
Unlike some of the newer displays that simulate the reading experience of paper, such as E Ink, Real Paper will not require a covering such as glass nor will it have to be embedded in a reading device. Real Paper will run on battery power with no need for plugs or cords. The power needs will be minimal since current will only be needed when the page display changes. RealPaper Displays does have plans to eventually produce a colorized version but for now will be sticking with your basic black and white.
However, unlike normal paper, Real Paper will be durable, although I’m sure it will still have the same “the dog ate my homework”, and “I laid it down and now I can’t find it” issues as normal paper – especially since it is so lightweight, thin and portable. There is no word yet on whether RealPaper Displays will produce Real Paper ready for incorporation into a three ring binder. We’ll just have to wait and see.
