Like arcade games? Make your own with Microsoft’s Popfly

By Triston McIntyre

Like arcade games? Make your own with Microsoft's PopflyHave you ever thought to yourself, boy, wouldn’t it be fantastic if I could design my own games? No, neither have I, but to each his own. If you have any inkling for creating games, there might not be an easier platform for doing so than Microsoft’s Popfly, based on Silverlight.

According to The Industry Standard, there isn’t an easier tool out there for aspiring game creators, and it is free to boot. Microsoft debuted the web-based software May 2nd, and has high hopes for the tool.

Popfly is based on Microsoft’s multimedia platform Silverlight. Silverlight is being touted as a competitor to leader Adobe’s flash format, and with the kind of implementation Microsoft has in mind, there’s a good chance that Silverlight will gain a foothold in the Adobe-driven market.

Maybe best of all is that the program is stupid-proof. Would be game makers have the option of either starting games from scratch, or can use pre-made templates with step by step instructions for creating their very own games.

You don’t have to limit yourself to playing the games all by your lonesome; apparently, embedding the games in your Facebook profile is relatively simple. For Vista users, the game can be loaded into the gadgets bar for your gaming pleasure whenever you like.

The tool is still in a beta, though over 200,000 users currently test the software. However, Microsoft will be rolling it out at Maker Faire in California soon enough.

Hopefully this tool will be as user-friendly as promised; Web 2.0 applications are always welcome, and maybe now all those Facebook addicts can stop sending different games and applications to friends in favor of designing their very own. We can only pray.
