Woman recovers stolen MacBook Pro with tech-skills, help from friends

By Danny Mendez

Woman recovers stolen MacBook Pro with tech-skills, help from friendsThere’s a general rule in life: don’t mess with anyone smarter than you because, well, they’ll outsmart you. Such was the fate of two young thieves who burglarized a woman’s apartment in White Plains, New York.

Edmon Shanikian, 23, and Ian Frias, 20, stole several items from the woman and her roommates. This included two flat-screen TVs, two iPods, some gaming consoles, DVDs, video games, and two laptops. Among the stolen the computers was a Macbook Pro, and it is this machine that led to the thieves’ downfall, says LoHud.

One of our victims happen to be a very tech saavy woman who owned that Macbook Pro, which was mysteriously logged onto the Internet on Tuesday after it was stolen. A friend called the victim, who was working at the Apple Store in the Westchester mall, and asked if she was online. Obviously our victim wasn’t, so she put her ingenuity to work.

The victim remotely connected to her computer using Apple’s Back to My Mac application, taking a photograph of one of the suspects and finding a picture of another saved on the computer. A friend of the victim later recognized the men from a previous mini-party at the apartment.

Police arrested Shanikian and Frias on Wednesday night, recovering the vicitim’s machine and $5,000 of stolen electronics. The duo has been charged with two felonies: second-degree burglary and fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Owned.

That is awesome. I have actually setup something similar to that but with my phone, so i can access my phone from anywhere just in case it does get lost or stolen, which i could connect to take some pictures. :)

This is awesome but it’s scary how they logged on their Mac Book externally and managed to take a picture!

      Very disturbing!
