Asus EeePC 900 on sale now with Windows XP or Linux

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Untitled The Asus EeePC 900 is now available to US customers.  Two well known online retailers are selling the tiny laptop with your choice of Windows XP or Linux.  The Windows XP version will cost a bit of a premium over the Linux version with a few other differences in specs as well.

Buy.com is selling the linux version of the EeePC 900 which features 20GB of SSD storage, a 1.3MP webcam and the 8.9-inch display with 1024 x 600 resolution for the quite reasonable price of $565.

ZipZoomFly can hook you up with the Windows XP version which has all the same specs except it has a smaller 12GB SSD storage space.  Both units feature an Intel Celeron M430 processor at 1.7GHz.

Rumors are that future versions of the EeePC 900 will have some form of an Intel Atom processor and if they do hit will be available around June.

Return policies for the EeePC 900 is pretty limited which is non-refundable in most cases and allows exchanges for defective units only so you’d better be sure you want one because there’s no sending it back.

Some of you may be excited enough that it is finally out but it may be wiser to wait and see if an Atom-powered version comes out because it will be better.

      I still think these laptops are way over priced. Last week Staples sold a Vista laptop with a 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB RAM and 1.9 Ghz dual core AMD and it also had DVD and CD for selling price of $399.

      Right now Micro center is selling a Vista laptop all this month for $379, no doubt can be converted to XP or Linux.

      With little trouble either laptop was can be converted to either Linux or XP Pro.

      Maybe when these tiny laptops sell consistently below $250, then I could see getting one. Right now (in my opinion) they are too expensive for what little they offer.

      @Ralph,

      The EEE’s aren’t overpriced when you compare them to other tiny laptops that weigh less than three pounds.

      For their price, they are ground-breaking. They have basically created a new category for laptops (ultralight, ultrasmall, relatively cheap). And they have inspired a host of imitators, some that improve on the EEE, from HP and others. Dell is rumored to be coming out with its EEE-killer shortly.
