Apple launching iPhone in new Asian countries

Apple recently announced it will sell the iPhone in four Asian countries later in 2008. Funnily enough, those countries aren’t China or Korea.
According to Reuters, the deals have been signed with Singapore’s Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, more widely known as SingTel. Three of Singtel’s affiliates in India, the Philippines and Australia will carry the phones in the respective countries.
Singtel’s Optus unit in Australia will offer the iPhone there, while Globe Telecom will be the Phillippine partner. Singtel also owns Globe jointly with domestic conglomerate Ayala Corp.
India’s Bharti Airtel Ltd, India’s leading mobile operator will be offering the phone to what might be a potential bounty harvest of a market – 260 million or more. SingTel has a more than 30 percent stake in Bharti.
Bharti Airtel Ltd, India’s top mobile operator, will carry the iPhone in the world’s fastest-growing wireless market, which already has more than 260 million mobile users. SingTel owns more than 30 percent of Bharti Airtel.
SingTel unit Optus will offer the iPhone in Australia, and Globe Telecom will be the Philippine partner. Globe Telecom is owned by SingTel and domestic conglomerate Ayala Corp.
This comes in the wake of news that the iPhone is already sold out in stores in the U.S. and Britain. Deals with European operators have also garnered media attention in the last week, as rumours of an updated iPhone model build up as the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference approaches next June.
