A Chilean hacks and posts the info on 6 million people
Hacking supposedly secure systems to point out flaws, although not legal (unless hired to do so), is usually done without revealing any information obtained. Certainly not posting personal information on 6 million unsuspecting people. Well some Chilean jerk hacker clearly doesn’t know the rules.
According to El Mercurio, a Chilean newspaper, several government servers including servers in the Education Ministry, Electoral Service, and the Military, were successfully hacked. No one knows who the hacker is yet, but many people outside of the government would like to see him or her get caught and punished.
Admittedly the security was not very good but posting the information including names, education, ID card numbers, phone numbers and addresses of 6 million people on the internet, was guaranteed to lose the hacker whatever goodwill he might have gained from pointing out the security shortcomings.
The hacker first posted the information on a Chilean tech blog but it was quickly removed by site administrators. The hacker also placed links to the information on another Chilean website where the information was again quickly removed.
The hacker claimed in a message to be pointing out the lax security in the governmental servers. His follow up act of posting confidential information cast doubt on his claim.
If he had merely hacked the systems, he might have actually gotten a job out of it to test future security, but posting the information was a real mistake. Now all he will manage (if the 6 million don’t get to him first) is a lengthy sentence and a lot of enemys.
