Best Buy releases Insignia brand Blu-Ray player

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Best Buy releases Insignia brand Blu-Ray player Best Buy and Insignia go together like cookies and milk but don’t taste nearly as good.  Insignia products have a reputation of having mundane features, being of below average quality but are dirt cheap.  The company now presents consumers with an Insignia Blu-Ray player which is only $50 cheaper than a PS3.

While it does set a new price point for Blu-Ray players its features can only be described as "lacking."  It plays Blu-Ray movies and has 1080p output but it lacks outputs and only supports 2-channel lossless audio.  I’m hoping that 5.1/7.1 surround sound support is in there somewhere because it would be a pretty lousy excuse for a Blu-Ray player if it didn’t support that.

At least it does have an HDMI output with support for 720p, 1080i and 1080p and really, if your TV doesn’t support 1080p then you don’t need Blu-Ray.

Insignia just produces low-cost products of questionable quality and if its current products are any indication, this Blu-Ray player will fall into the same category.  It’s short on features by the looks of things and that doesn’t justify its price of $350.  But, it does come with $100 in coupons and discounts good towards Blu-ray movies.

Maybe if it were $300 or even in the area of $250~$280 then it would be more acceptable.  For the price difference just get yourself a PS3 unless you really want those coupons.

You can feel free to look at the Insignia Blu-Ray player but just look, there are better things to spend that $350 like putting it towards a PS3.
