Forget the Asus EeePC 901, here’s model 1001
It all started with the EeePC model 701, then came the 901 but before we could all get used to the idea, the company announces model 1001. The EeePC model 1001 is set to compete with the line of 10-inch UMPCs being released by other companies.
The EeePC 901 has already been released to most major markets but is not in its final version; models with Intel’s Atom processor are expected by June so hold off on your purchase.
As for the EeePC 1001, the only thing that is known is that it will have a 10.6-inch display and will hopefully up the resolution over the 8.9-inch EeePC 901; it would be a true shame if it didn’t.
Hopefully the EeePC 1001 will ship with Intel’s Atom processor but it’s doubtful that it will be the dual core model as those versions of Atom wouldn’t be ready and Windows XP UMPC licensing restricts it to single-core processors.
If the image shown at GizmoLounge is any indication of what the EeePC 1001 will look like, color me impressed. I like the orange accents and silver-ish keyboard that looks like it was ripped right of a Dell Inspiron (and shrunk). The speakers also appear to be below the display as opposed to being off to the sides.
Don’t expect it to come cheap, the EeePC 901 costs right around $600 so it’s a good guess the 1001 will cost even more. Yes, you can get a fully featured Vista laptop for less (albeit a crappy one) but the EeePC 1001 already looks good enough to eat so buy it on that merit alone (just don’t eat it, silicon and plastic is not good for the digestive system of carbon-based life forms).

Or you could slap Linux on it and not have to worry about core licensing. XP is a poor choice in this case, it doesn’t scale very well (Mobile or CE anyone ?) and there are limitations on memory and storage per Microsoft . I’m sure it runs, I remember running it in 512 meg with no problems. But a well tuned Linux Distro would blow the doors off. I guess you can buy the Linux version and put OEM XP on it but why?

Really ASUS, you have dropped the ball on this UMPC thing. The best thing about the original eepc was the small size and the PRICE!!.
Each release just gets more bloated in terms of size and cost, ie now you have to pay the M$ tax, making cheap lappies with a larger screen the best choice.
Should have just put a bigger screen on the old 701 and left it at that……..
