Mozilla goes for Guinness World Record using FireFox 3 release on Download Day
By Leslie Poston
I have been using the FireFox Release Candidate 1 test program for a while now, and I like it – well, most of it. It is missing a few key features and plugins for me that I had grown used to, but it looks more like the beautiful Safari, while still offering the function of FireFox, so I’ve been happy. Mozilla is banking on the happiness of its loyal users to get it to the top of the Guinness World Record books this summer.
How will Mozilla use the official release of FireFox 3 to reach the top of the heap in the record books? By trying to have the most users to ever download a program in its first 24 hours of release. They have even dubbed their goal Download Day, and have started spreading the word that it could happen as early as the middle of June.
If you want to try out the test release of FireFox 3, called FireFox Release Candidate 1 (sexy!), you can grab it here. Keep in miind that if you have grown used to using BlogRovr, Colorful Tabs, Google Gears preview, Tab Mix Plus and other plugins, they may not work. Stumble Upon and other toolbars seem to translate just fine, however.
Mozilla has no previous record to reach or exceed. This record is one they are creating themselves. You can read more about the record (and the browser) on the FaceBook fan page they have, or on the campaign write up, found here. I must admit I am a fan of FireFox and Thunderbird and use them exclusively on my MacBook, choosing them over Safari and Mail, hands down. I’m excited to see the improvements in the final release.
