Cell Phones: Using your mobile phone could save you a speeding ticket

May 30, 2008

Cell phone could save you a speeding ticket Don’t you just hate those annoying speeding tickets? Well rest assured, Trapster is here to save you. Trapster is the latest in cell phone/networking service where you can contribute as well as take advantage of, to ensure that you don’t get another speeding ticket again.

Trapster sends alerts to you or others when nearing a hot zone, or an area where a known speed trap is located. The way the data is gathered is via other users calling in about a known speed trap, thus building a dynamic net over all the roads.

According to Information Week this technology is made available via the GPS capabilities on your cell phone. The cell towers will triangulate your position and relay it to Trapster who will then put it into their data base and alert other drivers in that vicinity using the service.

There are some questions if this method of detecting speed traps works. It sounds good in theory but how will it play out in reality? It will be interesting to see if as many people will call in regarding speed traps, and the accuracy of the data as well.

I have a feeling this system will not be accurate at all, considering cops do not just sit in one spot all day. However I suppose if a cop is covering a general area it could help force you to stay on your toes and not get sloppy.

It would be interesting to get the opinion on such technology from law enforcement agencies. If they view such technology as contributing to the problem or helping ease the problems we face today on the road.
