Google unveils ‘Android’ for cell phones, the iPhone killer
By Mike Ferro
Recently Google unveiled its near finished software that will eventually run various cell phones throughout many different manufacturers’ mobile technology. With touch screen friendly interface capability ‘Android’ could give the iPhone a run for what its worth.
‘Android’ is the name of the open-source software that Google is trying to leverage that will act as the interface for many phones. Currently there are 34 partners aiding in the launch of Android, including cell phone giants Samsung and LG.
This is a unique concept, having the interface developed besides the company that manufactured the phone. This will help give users consistency when using various phones in the future. Since the software is free, developers are urged to download the SDK and experiment with it as well.
According to engadget developers have been flocking to the Android SDK, with an estimated 750,000 downloads thus far. They also contrast the Apple’s iPhone SDK which only received 100,000 downloads thus far since release.
Yahoo reports the Android offers unique touchscreen capabilities such as instead of remembering password users can assign a symbol which they would draw it out with their finger as their password.
I think having a single software interface for all cell phones would only benefit the consumers, however one negative is the Android search page will have the usual assortment of advertisements such as your regular Google search page.
If Google is able to display everything without the advertisement getting in the way of the actual meat of the product it should not be a big deal, however that remains to be see. It’s quiet exciting to see these two technologies face off for the smart phone realm, who do you think will come out on top?
