Red Hat Linux zaps award for best server OS
By Matt Jansen
Competition drives innovation, at least that’s the basic premise behind capitalism and even open source solutions like Linux seem to play by its rules. After all, there’s big money behind some of the consulting arrangements for Linux experts, and right now it looks like having a specialization in Red Hat pays.
Of course, that’s assuming that the athlete with the prize is most popular with the crowd. Even so, “hats off” to everybody over at Red Hat for earning the best server operating system award.
Some details from Business Wire: As the winner in the Server Operating Systems category, Red Hat Enterprise Linux was selected by an elite group of value added resellers (VARs) that sell a range of solutions and vary in size. Channel Insider polled the VARs to rank products based on criteria, including familiarity with the product, opportunity for after-market sales, product profit potential, impact of the product on the technology market as a whole and the product vendor’s service and support. Second place and third place in the Server Operating Systems category behind Red Hat Enterprise Linux were awarded to Sun Microsystems Solaris 10 and Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SPI respectively.
Channel Insider hands out a variety of awards in different categories, some examples are Business Intelligence, Networking and VOIP.
The ratings are “based on controlled voting by the readers of Channel Insider, who rated each product on familiarity, vendor support, after sales opportunity, profit potential and impact on the market”.
It’s hard to argue with the users!
