Chevy Volt temporarily suspends reality
For anyone who’s thrown their hands up and raised the white flag when it comes to high gas prices, there may be hope on the way. The Chevy Volt temporarily suspended that economic reality during a test drive with Bob Lutz using power from a 16-kwh lithium-ion battery pack.
Lutz was one of the original proprietors of the Chevy Volt concept so it’s likely no one is as pleased as him to see its development progress this far. Lutz writes on his blog that:
It hit me on the drive out to Milford, as I passed gas station after gas station with prices for regular unleaded hugging the $4 mark: This makes the importance and potential of our all-electric glide through our proving ground roads even clearer.
Granted there’s a fair amount of spin in that statement and Lutz’s commitment to benevolence likely isn’t his primary reason for driving the Chevy Volt. BUT, giving customers the option of using an energy other than gasoline will change the face of the automobile market and stimulate price fluctuations. And it has the potential to save drivers hundreds of dollars every month.
One exciting aspect about electric power is its instant draw, Lutz says “while the [Chevy Volt] is still most definitely a work in progress, the thrill of driving electrically — that instant, silent torque — is certainly present and accounted for!”
GM is getting better at marketing on the web and posing for the press to stimulate positive buzz, but on this round the stakes are higher and everyone watching is waiting to see how the company delivers on its promises.
