Facebook overtakes MySpace as world’s most popular social network

By Dave Parrack

Facebook overtakes MySpace as world\'s most popular social networkFacebook and MySpace have traded blows continuously over the past couple of years, with MySpace generally coming out on top in terms of popularity. However, that has now changed, and April finally saw Facebook catch up with MySpace, so that now it is the world’s most popular social network.

In terms of global traffic, April data from Comscore shows that Facebook has caught up with MySpace, with both grabbing around 115 million visitors to the respective sites. Assuming the growth patterns carried on as they were, today will find Facebook to be the most popular social network in the world.

America, of course, is still all about MySpace, with Facebook only managing roughly half the unique visitors of the former. According to Techcrunch, Facebook’s growth has all happened in international markets, with young professionals in countries such as India being amongst the largest set of new users.

Personally, I was always a Facebook man. Oh, I had a MySpace profile, but the appeal soon went away, and Facebook quickly became my social network of choice. I was so impressed at one point, and almost addicted to the site, that I was compelled to write an article titled ‘Five reasons why Facebook will prevail over MySpace’.

However, my attention span isn’t what it once was, and by March I was urging everyone to give up on the daily updates, poking sessions and Scrabulous games due to the novelty having well and truly worn off.

I still use Facebook, but for me it isn’t what it once was. Not that Facebook will be bothered by what I say of course, as the numbers speak for themselves. Now all the company has to do is work out how to make some money from the new users, and Facebook will be set for true global domination.
