Let's face it - email is designed for messaging and not for the action item oriented nature of our our work.
ActionBase are working on an evolution of email called "ActionMail" which is essentially a collaborative email wiki where any recipient can work on and is managed like a regular email in Outlook. Email overload is reduced dramatically since the same email is constantly being updated instead of getting numerous emails on the same logical issue.
Check it out:

Ok, maybe "necessary evil" was the wrong choice of words. I meant it more as a play on words, given the fact that this company is trying to reduce the amount of time spent on email, than e-mail itself being evil.

And I do agree that people overload people. Its not the fault of the devices but ourselves overusing them. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

I applaud what you guys are doing out there :)

I wouldn't call email a necessary EVIL - it is a necessary and very useful goodness, IF used correctly. One objective of the Information Overload Research Group we founded (http://www.iorgforum.org) will be educate people to apply this tool wisely.

Email doesn't overload people... people overload people!
