Cell Phones: Is your mobile phone powerful enough to pop popcorn?

June 16, 2008

Is your moblie phone powerful enough to pop popcorn? A very popular YouTube video which has already garnered over two million hits would have you believe so. This video became so popular even media outlets have picked it up and questioned its legitimacy.

According to the YouTube video, when some teenager’s phones receive incoming calls, nearby kernels were popping into popcorn. I know this sounds extremely farfetched yet some people actually believed there was some truth to this video.

What’s even more unbelievable is that a Hawai local television studio went out to prove this video was fake. They even had a physicist to refute this was impossible.

I would certainly hope this was impossible, or all of our collective brains would have popped out of our heads already. As common sense would dictate, you would need something extremely powerful such as a microwave to nuke those kernels.

Considering how extremely low the microwaves emitted from cell phones are, this is highly unlikely. There are no studies confirming any hazards of using cell phones on oneself. It if it were true, you can rest assured these phones would be snatched off the market quickly.

As it turns out, that YouTube video was a publicity stunt by a Bluetooth company to promote their headsets. I suppose their message is something along the lines of “don’t pop your brain. pop whatever is next to your pant pockets.”

It’s quite low these days when marketers are targeting YouTube sensationalization to sell their products. I suppose one can’t blame them; just look at the comments received for that video. People actually believed the video and commented on how they would go out and buy a headset.
