Firefox 3.0: the invitation came but the update did not
By Susan Wilson
If you signed up to get Firefox 3.0 on the first day to make the Guinness World Record, you could be finding it frustrating right about now. The actual release was supposed to be 1:00 p.m. EDT or 10:00 am PDT. It is now 2:32 p.m. and you can’t get there from here.
As you may remember from an earlier article, Firefox requested that people sign up to receive emails when Firefox 3.0 was ready for download. In order to make the Guinness Book of Records, Firefox wants everyone to download 3.0 within the next 24 hours.
Waking up this morning I was expecting to be able to download it as soon as I fired up computer. Nada. Not happening.
I received my email to download the new version about 1:36 but decided to wait an hour to let the initial scramble settle down some. In the meantime, I have been waiting to see what the final version would actually be like. I mean, I’ve been using Firefox since it was initially released so I’m really looking forward to “ an enhanced web experience.”
Stories announcing the arrival of the big day have been appearing and so I hopped on to get my new improved version of 3.0. I linked from my email to the download site. Then I clicked on the download. But instead of version 3.0 starting to download, version 2.0.0.14 downloads instead.
I already have version 2.0.0.14, I want version 3.0! I know glitches happen and things never go according to plan, but still. This is Mozilla and Firefox. I expect better from them.
But I guess as with all software companies (*cough* Microsoft *cough*) these unanticipated problems just can’t be helped.
I’ll update as soon as the right version is downloadable.
UPDATE: It is 4:16 p.m. EDT and I have finally been able to reach the website again. I am currently downloading version 3.0 and hope to be enjoying it shortly!

Mozilla.com has not been working for me, so if it is the same for you, go to http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/ and download it :-\
