McCain campaign ad features soundtrack to Medal of Honor by an Obama supporter
By Danny Mendez
See that face to the left? That’s Senator McCain’s face, and there’s a lot more where that came from in a new McCain ad, which features a song from a Medal of Honor game. Though, that’s not what makes the issue so icky.
The featured song is from Medal of Honor: European Assault, but the piece’s composer Christopher Lennertz isn’t amused. Speaking to GamePolitics, Lennertz said it bothers him that the McCain campaign didn’t check to see if the creators of the content they chose supported McCain or his views, but he admits the organization didn’t do anything illegal. Furthermore, he’d like the public to know he proudly supports Barack Obama for the Presidency of the United States — but not McCain.
In a public statement, however, he took his criticism to a more philosophical level.
What, I ask, does such an action or oversight say about Mr. McCain’s regard for the intrinsic value of American products, services, or creations? Where does the line get drawn? Is it reasonable to use my music to sell tobacco, alcohol, or pornographic materials? Is it reasonable to use it to promote a religion in which I do not believe? Is it legal?…yes, perhaps, is it ethical?…I don’t believe so. Is it American?…definitely not by my standards.
Wow, that’s a fierce stab at McCain, but I think it’s an understandable response. As a businessman, artist, and especially an American, Lennertz was wronged, and unfortunately for McCain, in politics, minute mistakes often tow significant consequences.
For the curious, we’ve embedded the ad below. It’s called “Safe”, and Lennertz’s song is called “Casualties of War”. Enjoy.
