It’s official – Blizzard resurrects Deckard Cain for Diablo 3

Blizzard’s officially got most PC gamers in its thrall by announcing Diablo III.
Yes, Deckard Cain will return for the third installment for one of PC gaming’s most successful franchises ever – Diablo. The news that had Blizzard fanboys in throes of bliss was announced at the World of Warcraft TCG Worldwide Invitational in Paris. According to the official press release, Diablo III will pick up where the story left off, twenty years after the events of Diablo II.
Story synopsis?
“Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal have been defeated, but the Worldstone, which once shielded the inhabitants of the world of Sanctuary from the forces of both the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, has been destroyed, and evil once again stirs in Tristram.”
Not that we needed an excuse to excise legions of demons from earth with our computer mice anyway.
Players will have the five character classes to choose from, two of which were shown at Paris – the barbarian and witch doctor. As to the graphics, expect an upgrade as Blizzard claims it will feature a custom 3D-graphics engine to add ‘a high level of detail and vivid special effects’. That’s code for “this an excuse to make you wait as long as it took for us to announce StarCraft II”.
Expect fierce skirmishes online as well via the soon to be upgraded Battle.net. Macintosh users should also rejoice as there’ll be no long wait to join in the fun – PC and Mac versions will be released simultaneously.

Blizzard should probably be given extra kudos for recognizing the potential that Mac users have as a gaming market. Once the Vivendi merger with Activision happens, EA should likely be looking over its shoulder as the next big gaming juggernaut looms into view. Our suggestion to EA to stave off the threat? Give us the next installment of Baldur’s Gate, with a large helping of Minsc and Boo. Squeak!
