The HTC Touch Diamond hits first North American carrier
By Triston McIntyre
That’s right folks, the hot new touch handset from HTC that has been making waves outside North American territories is finally inbound — to Canada. But small steps are still steps in the right direction, and there’s a whole heap of information surrounding the Diamond’s Canadian launch with the carrier Telus.
The Boy Genius Report has the skinny on the forthcoming release of the HTC Touch Diamond on Candian cellular carrier Telus. All things considered, I would say the Telus-branded version of the Diamond will make a very nice showing, indeed.
The most important distinction between the Telus HTC Touch Diamond and alternate iterations is that this particular version will come equipped with an EV-DO Rev. A radio, which allows for data transfers of 3.1 Mbit/s downloads and 1.8 Mbit/s uploads (optimally). EV-DO is specific to CDMA networks, while most standard HTC Touch Diamonds are built for GSM 3G use. Beyond that, the Diamond is receiving a boost in memory, with 256 Mb RAM and 256 Mb ROM (where other iterations only have 192 Mb RAM).
The CDMA version of the Diamond also weighs a whopping 5 grams more (something most folks already accustomed to smartphones shouldn’t mind terribly), and Telus will be distributing phone cases with the Diamond.
Those people who are excited about the Touch Diamond coming to the U.S. in a GSM version needn’t be worried…more and more information keeps surfacing that suggests the Touch Diamond will be available for T-Mobile at least. It could be possible that Verizon might consider selling the Touch Diamond in CDMA flavor, though I would guess that other touchscreen phones are being touted as the prize fighters at this point in time with that carrier.
To all you Canadians out there: go and pick up an HTC Touch Diamond! At least do it so you can say you have something us folks to your south don’t have yet.
