The Blackberry Bold skates by the FCC

By Triston McIntyre

The Blackberry Bold skates by the FCCFor all of you out there that hold Crackberries near and dear to your heart, you should be more than excited that RIMs forthcoming handset, the Blackberry Bold, has received approval from the FCC. That means the Bold could be in your pockets (or holster, for the real geeks) in just over a month.

Word has it, by way of the Boy Genius Report, that the Blackberry Bold has officially received FCC approval. The Blackberry bold promises to be an exciting new smartphone with a lot of changes and upgrades from previous models.

The biggest difference between the Blackberry Bold and its predecessors is that the Bold will be boasting a completely redesigned user interface. As you can see by the photos, the new user interface has a very clean and simplistic design. As one who has owned a couple Crackberries in my time, I think the new UI looks like a great improvement over the older interface.

Additionally, the Bold has some impressive hardware specifications. The BlackBerry Bold has quad-band GSM (at 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz) for the international travellers, Tri-Band UMTS (850/1900/2100 Mhz) for those who prefer to roll CDMA-style, and WiFi.

Then again, this might not be the Blackberry you’re waiting for if shiny and flashy is what you’re interested in. The BlackBerry Thunder, though it has experienced some setbacks, offers full touchscreen capabilities with haptic feedback, in addition to the normal business applications you’re used to getting from RIM.

That doesn’t mean the Bold won’t see high adoption rates. With a fully-redesigned qwerty keyboard, power texters and emailers will no doubt feel better equipped punching away on real keys than hunting and pecking a touchscreen keyboard. Personally, I still prefer qwerty keyboards to touch keyboards because there’s a certain security in having all the ridges and bumps memorized for text entry on-the-go. As an HTC follower, I’m hoping that the HTC Touch Pro becomes available in addition to the Touch Diamond for that very reason.

Still, those who are used to owning Crackberries might be more comfortable switching to the Bold rather than the Thunder. With the Bold anticipated to hit shelves in less than 2 months, and the Thunder without any release date in sight, you might not have much of a choice either way.
