AT&T makes another empty promise of free WiFi for the iPhone

July 18, 2008

AT&T makes another empty promise of free WiFi for the iPhone iPhone users everywhere would rejoice if AT&T granted them free access to its 17,000 WiFi hotspots around the country. Sadly, even though AT&T has posted a notice twice now announcing free WiFi, both of them were . . . an accident.

The startling part of the notice is how professional it sounds. Could there be a rogue marketing communications employee bent on pushing free WiFi out to the masses? Who knows, but here’s the verbiage, courtesy of CNET.

AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi hot-spot network with more than 17,000 hot spots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail, and Web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location.

Trying to react quickly, AT&T removed the post earlier today hoping to avoid the backlash of millions of disappointed fans. The word has gotten out though and now people feel like they’re missing something they never had in the first place.

An AT&T spokesperson replied saying “we have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone,” he said in an e-mail. “The Web page was posted in error and is being removed.”

Short and sweet, just the kind of response a public relations rep makes when there’s a fair amount of uncertainty going on.

iPhone users have a massive amount of information available to them online about the phone, some of it true, and some of it just hype. But, when the actual carrier of the iPhone posts a statement, it seems appropriate to consider it a reliable source.
