Can Dell’s new Hybrid PCs compete with PS3 and Xbox 360 for the living room?
By Mike Ferro
Dell recently introduced its ultra small PC line for the living room. This is Dell’s answer to the small PCs recently launched by other manufacturers such as Apple and HP.
These PCs are extremely small, said to be roughly 80% smaller then the regular sized desktops. With fully customizable face plates and covers Dell is pushing these PCs for the living room with style. The great thing about these ultra small PCs are they are perfect to sit on a shelf next to your home entertainment system without much clutter.
These PCs are dubbed by Dell as the Studio Hybrid PCs because of the processor it uses. The PCs use laptop processors that are ultra cool, consuming less power, coupled with the design for being stationary along with long term use.
There is even a Blu-ray drive option so those wanting to make the jump to next gen media format can do so and watch hi-def movies as well. The PCs start at a low price of $499 and can be customized to your needs such as memory and other add-ons.
This is definitely a direction I can foresee technology moving towards in the future with the PC becoming more of an entertainment device as time goes by. Currently the next big technology war is speculated to be waged in the living room.
Such companies like Microsoft and Sony are already battling it out for the living room supremacy. Microsoft already has the Xbox 360 which is capable of playing DVD movies and downloading movies off the Internet. Sony has the PS3 which has a Blu-ray player built-in as well as the capability to download movies off the Internet.
The new Dell PCs are powerful enough to watch movies and surf the web with but are not powerful enough to play video games on.
