Nissan’s ECO pedal "pushes you back" to help with fuel efficiency

By Justin Montgomery

Nissan's ECO pedal pushes you back to help with fuel efficiency Nissan showcased some new technology recently aimed at taking a proactive approach at fuel efficiency and collision avoidance.  Its new “ECO pedal” actually pushes the gas pedal back at you when it senses you’re accelerating to quickly.  That, in addition to collision sensors that will automatically stop your vehicle from getting in an accident round up Nissan’s new approach to change its image.

The ECO pedal system calculates the most efficient acceleration rate in the vehicle based on how fast fuel is being consumed and other various factors which causes the gas pedal to push back to alert overzealous drivers.  A signal indicator located on the dashboard flashes and changes colors to help remind drivers as well, according to the Associate Press.

Nissan claims the system can increase fuel efficiency by 5-10% overall, and will be available on all models some time next year.  For the purpose of safety during certain conditions, you can also turn the system off.  The company is obviously trying to woo the eco-centric crowd, but for me it looks to be more of an annoyance than anything.

Nissan also showcased its “collision-free” prototype as well that features sensors at the back and side of the vehicle that turn on alarms, signals and brakes to help avoid collisions if at all possible.  The system also helps the vehicle maintain a safe distance with the car in front, as well as preventing it from veering off its lane.  Nissan and Infiniti already offer both intelligent cruise control and lane departure warning systems that offer the same functionality, but I guess they’re just improving on them with in-vehicle sensors.

Nissan always amazes me at the technology it integrates into its vehicles.  While most car companies will only showcase new technology on prototypes, Nissan actually brings them to production.  As a prime example, almost all Nissan and Infiniti models being produced today feature an “intelligent key” system and push button start, which allows you to not have to fumble with keys to unlock and start your vehicle.  While other luxury brands offer the same thing, Nissan is installing it as standard equipment on vehicles that cost under $20K.

What a terrible idea from Nissan. I don’t want this feature because there are times when sudden acceleration is needed to avoid an accident.

I can see lawsuits coming from the implementation of this device when left on and the driver wasn’t able to take control of his vehicle.
