Best Buy providing gadgets-on-the-go at an airport near you
What do you do when you find yourself without your phone charger, digital camera, or your beloved media player while heading off on vacation? Best Buy hopes you’ll visit one of its new vending machine-like kiosks its installing in airports across the country. Choose your item, swipe your credit card, and you’re on your way.
The new kiosks, dubbed Best Buy Express, are showing up at 12 chosen locations across the country as part of a “pilot program,” according to CNet. They’ve already been installed at airports in Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and San Francisco, with the rest going in by the beginning of September.
The array of products is actually quite impressive. You’ll find things like media players, unlocked cell phones, digital cameras, portable gaming devices, chargers of all kinds, flash drives and various storage, cell phone and computer accessories, headphones, and even Best Buy gift cards if you’re in a giving mood. Pretty much anything that’s likely to be left behind when trying to pack quickly is now available right in the terminal. There was no mention as to where they’re placing them in the airports, or whether they’re available before having to go through security.
There’s been countless times I’ve found myself without some crucial accessory or charger of some sort and have had to wait until I get somewhere to track down an electronics store to pick up a new one. Best Buy claims the pricing should be “close” to what they are in stores, but in airports, that’s usually not the case. I wonder what happens when your expensive media player gets stuck while being delivered. The kiosks look like they’re pretty sturdy and most likely have a savvy delivery system, but I wonder who you call on when something goes wrong.
