The Blackberry Javelin offers Bold performance for less
By Triston McIntyre
Okay, sure, the Blackberry Bold promises to be the best handset to come from RIM ever, but for some, the price point might be a bit too high. Luckily, it seems that the Blackberry Javelin will offer almost all the performance of the Bold for a little less of your hard-earned money.
There is a supposed leaked spec list floating around the internet, and Engadget Mobile has the skinny on the details of this new addition to the Blackberry lineup. This new handset will most likely replace the Blackberry Curve for at least T-Mobile, and that is certainly good news for Crackberry addicts.
All things considered, if you’re attracted to the Bold, but perhaps not the price point or 3G (why you wouldn’t be attracted to 3G is beyond me), then it seems the Javelin has everything else. The Javelin boasts a 512 Mhz processor, 256 Mb storage, WiFi, the same breathtaking 480 x 360 display as the Bold, and a 3.2 megapixel camera to boot. Really the only thing you’ll be missing is the redesigned keyboard, the faux leather back, and 3G.
Another nice thing we can assume based upon the specifications of the device and the position it should fill in T-Mobile’s lineup is that it will definitely ring up for substantially less on the cash register than the Bold. The Bold has been estimated to cost $350 with 2-year contract at launch (hopefully in October). The current Blackberry Curve costs $150 with 2-year contract on T-Mobile, so I would guess you might be spending somewhere between $200 and $250 for the Javelin when it launches.
Of course, the question would be when the Javelin will launch. It certainly seems odd to release a device without the high-speed power of the Bold after the Bold is released, but that wouldn’t be a new move for T-Mobile. Hopefully we will see the Javelin before the end of the year.
