Apple iPhone 3G – coming to a Best Buy near you soon
Apple hardly needs any help in selling huge numbers of iPhones, but with the announcement of the first independent retailer to be given permission to stock the device, Best Buy is going to be doing exactly that. The iPhone is soon going to be available absolutely everywhere.
The Apple iPhone 3G has been on sale for over a month now, and has already sold in vast numbers. In fact, business has been so brisk for Apple that it was able to announce the first 1 million iPhones had been sold in just three days. But that could just be the beginning of the sales blitz, as Best Buy has today announced that the iPhone will be going on sale in all 970 U.S. stores from September 7th.
As rumoured a couple of weeks ago, the iPhone 3G will be on sale at every Best Buy Mobile, which since August 6th is a department in all of Best Buy’s 970 stores across the USA. All Best Buy stores already carry the iPod, and the majority also stock Apple Mac computers. So although this may be a natural progression, it’s still big news.
Apple has always been very careful (some would say overly so) in controlling who can sell its products, particularly when it comes to the iPhone. Until now the device was only available in Apple and AT&T stores in the US, but this announcement massively opens up the options available to Americans looking to buy an iPhone 3G.
According to Yahoo News, Brian J. Dunn, president and chief operating officer, Best Buy, said:
The iPhone has changed the way people think about their mobile phones, and we are delighted to help more customers get their hands on this revolutionary product. Our Best Buy Mobile employees have the training and expertise to deliver the best experience possible for our customers – from the initial purchase through the life of their iPhones.
Best Buy will be selling the iPhone 3G for the suggested retail price of $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model, but buyers will still have to sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T.
The fact that the iPhone 3G will now be available from a pile-them-high, sell-them-cheap retailer such as Best Buy just shows how much of a mainstream product Apple sees it becoming. If this trend is repeated then I expect to see the iPhone on sale in as many places as the iPod before long.
