Google Android SDK hits v.0.9, showcases sexy widget-laden interface
By Triston McIntyre
With T-Mobile’s soon-to-be new hotness, the HTC Dream, hitting the FCC just yesterday, the burning question on the minds of gadget geeks everywhere is where Google stands in development of it’s iPhone-slaying operating system Android. Quite conveniently, new video footage and screens of the Google Android software development kit version 0.9 popped up yesterday as well, and Android looks just about ready to go.
Engadget Mobile has first-hand footage of what would seem to be the last beta release of the Android SDK along with screen shots, and to say you should be impressed is an understatement. The latest demo of Android shows off a very fluid set of movable widgets, sliding tabs and flick movement between screens.
Definitely check out the video if you’re interested in seeing what Google has touted as a direct competitor to the Apple’s iPhone. Taking into account that Android still isn’t in a final production build, I think Google has taken the appropriate steps in creating a mobile operating system that will function just as well, if not better, than Apple’s mobile OSX.
While other handset manufacturers like Samsung have taken the copycat approach to taking down the iPhone with the Instinct, I believe that nailing the concepts that the iPhone executes properly and making them distinct and unique will be what inevitably proves successful in outmaneuvering Apple in the mobile handset market. Android at least for now seems to have done that.
If Google can go bigger and bolder than the iPhone as well as make the mobile operating system particularly business-oriented in addition to advanced, the iPhone could very easily become just another smart touchscreen phone on the market. Manufacturers like HTC are already building off solid platforms like Windows Mobile to deliver impressive touchscreen interfaces like TouchFlo 3D, and in short order I see the glamour of the iPhone dulling significantly.
Again, the screens and video footage of the Android SDK v.0.9 definitely show that Android will be raring to go within the next couple months. That comes very close to substantiating rumors that T-Mobile will be making the HTC Dream with Android available during a special pre-order period by September 17th.
