HTC adds yet another sibling to the Touch lineup with S740
By Triston McIntyre
There’s very little as beautiful as witnessing the birth of a newborn (not in the literal sense, as I don’t really have the stomach for it). Maybe the next best thing is learning that HTC is rounding out the Touch line with yet another variation, this particular one having now two (count ‘em, two) keyboards for those who won’t settle for one flavor…they want the whole menu!
The Boy Genius Report reports that HTC is adding yet another Touch handset to the family tree; where the Touch Diamond is a completely touch-screen handset with no tactile keyboard, and the Touch Pro has a touch-screen with a slide out qwerty keyboard, the HTC S740 has a full qwerty keyboard and a classic number pad keyboard to complete the the well-rounded lineup.
Of course, adding a numeric pad to the face of the Touch handset will have its drawbacks, the most important being that there is less pretty screen space to stare in awe at. You can’t get your touch on, and instead of running Windows Mobile 6.1 professional (like the Touch Pro and Touch Diamond), you’re getting the run-of-the-mill 6.1 standard edition.
On the flip side, there are a lot of positive attributes in this little filly. The S740 isn’t quite as sizable as the Touch Pro, but retains the full slide-out qwerty keypad. I don’t know about you, but as much as I shouldn’t engage in such dangerous activity, I have been known, on occasion, to pound a text message or two while driving…a feat that is hard to achieve on a full and spread-out keyboard. No such problem with the S740.
Because the handset doesn’t have a touch-screen, I would venture a guess that the S740 will be the least expensive of the bunch. Screen space jacks the price right up on any handset, and removing the admittedly pricy feature of a touch-screen should make the handset even more affordable.
Though the Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro haven’t quite made their ways to the U.S. market at this point, I would imagine the S740 won’t be too far behind, as it will be the “bargain” of the bunch for those watching their new recession budgets. Tightening up the financial belts won’t mean you can’t get a bit of that HTC goodness after all!
