Joost to turn browser-based

By Emily Price

It looks like in the coming months Joost will start bringing its content to the web, without requiring users to download their desktop software. The internet TV company previously required users to download a piece of software to use it’s service, now users will just have to download a browser plug-in, making it slightly simpler for them to access Joost and its content.

I used Joost for a while during their beta phase, and then for a few months after they became available to the public. The idea behind the service is pretty neat, but one thing one thing it’s always been lacking has been good content. Since it’s launch sites like Hulu who have the content, and don’t require any kind of downloads to get it, have started popping up…which certainly doesn’t help Joost stay in the web TV game.

TechCrunch reported the upcoming web launch of Joost earlier this weekend. In their post they mention that it’ll be interesting to see how Joost fares against their competition of Hulu, Amazon, and Fancast…and I have to agree. Joost is offering a pretty similar product, except one that’s not really as good. Given the option I think most viewers will turn to Joost’s competition instead, but their move to a browser-based service is definitely a step in the right direction, even if it is a small one.

Joost does offer more options for interacting with others while you watch programs. Currently you can discuss certain portions of programs with friends in a much more friendly way than you can with other similar sites. If Joost is able to get their hands on some decent content, then they could have a chance of giving the competition a run for their money.

Do any of you currently use Joost? What do you think it will take for the service to beat its competition, or do you think it’s a lost cause?
