T-Mobile, Google schedule official Android, Dream unveiling for 9/23
By Triston McIntyre
Aside from the fact that we at Blorge have something of a penchant for all things gadgetry, normally the announcement of a new handset unveiling wouldn’t warrant too much attention. In this case, an official date being set for the release of both HTC’s aesthetically-controversial Dream handset and Google’s Android platform calls for something more along the lines of an Olympic games opening ceremony.
Okay, perhaps I exaggerate slightly. Still, you should be made aware that T-Mobile has announced an official date for the unveiling of both the Google Android platform and the HTC Dream. That date, I’m pleased to say, will be next Tuesday, September 23rd, the news of which comes by way of TMoNews.
Though previous rumors had alleged that T-Mobile and Google would unveil the Dream and Android tomorrow, waiting a week certainly shouldn’t pain those interested in the handset too terribly. It is also believed that a pre-order will be made available to existing T-Mobile customers along with the formal announcement. Many hope that this pre-order will include a sort of one-time low price for those existing and interested T-Mo customers in the range of $150-199 with 2-year contract extension.
Obviously, as the handset hasn’t really formally been introduced to the mobile community, exact specifications for the Dream have yet to be completely fleshed out. Some phone geeks believe that the Dream photos being circulated aren’t even close to what T-Mobile, Google and HTC have planned, which would probably mean the purported specifications I’m about to give you could be way off, but here it goes anyway…
The HTC Dream (or G1 as it is also known) is rumored to have 3G (the one thing that very few doubt), Wi-Fi, a special set of Google apps including Maps, Docs and others, Youtube video, various IM applications, a 3-megapixel camera, and external memory slot. From what you see of the photo, the Dream will also have a large touchscreen accompanied by a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Leaked T-Mobile documents also suggest that the dream will come in three colors: brown, white and black.
Adding to the Android hype, Google displayed the graphical properties of the HTC Dream and Android at its Developer Day in London earlier today. You can catch footage of the presentation here. As you can see, both the handset and the operating system are capable of some impressive graphical feats, not the least of which being the ability to run graphics upwards of 40 frames per second.
If all that doesn’t get you at least slightly interested in what’s going on with T-Mobile, Android and the Dream, there isn’t much else I can do for you. Tune your browsers here next Tuesday for all the yummy T-Mobile Dream information your gadget-geeky hearts desire.
