Twitter adds themes, no Fail Whale in sight
This morning Twitter users are waking up to an all new layout and themes for their profile pages. In the midst of these changes and hints at more to come, so far the service hasn’t suffered any outages because of the changes.
The layout changes that Twitter released are fairly cosmetic updates to the look and feel of the update box and friend count. The navigation tabs have also been moved into the sidebar from the top of the user’s friend updates. The Twitter blog hints that this will enable them to add more buttons as they release upcoming features.
The only real feature enhancement in this update to Twitter is themes. Users have always been able to change their background image and the color of some of the design elements. The themes just extend that functionality to give users an easier way to dress up their profiles.
Most of the themes are simple and elegant designs with a natural element to them. There’s a cloud theme that echoes the blues and feel of Twitter’s basic design. There are also a number of other themes with simple colors and vines, flowers, trees or the night sky as you can see below.
It’s promising to see Twitter start to make some positive change to its service. For months Twitter was plagued with downtime issues that made its outage notice, the Fail Whale, a well known joke amongst its users. Since the purchase of Summize, which was integrated to the service as http://search.twitter.com, the outages have all but disappeared. However, this is the only enhancement the company has rolled out since stabilizing the platform.
Now all that remains is for the engineers to continue this newly mustered forward momentum. It’s likely that speculation about the coming features will flourish across Twitterverse and it would be poor form to Twitter’s user-base down.
