Range Rover joins the ranks of electric car makers

Land Rover joins the ranks of electric car makers CORRECTION:  Move over Aptera and Tesla, Range Rover is planning to create an electric car of its own.  Of course, Range Rover isn’t going to be creating any wimpy old electric car, it will be creating the electric car for the off road crowd.

According to the Telegraph,  this Range Rover prototype that will get 200 miles per charge.  The car will have solar panels on the roof to charge the batteries when they get low and will also power many of the electrical systems.  Other technologies may be in some of the electric versions to help charge the battery and more efficiently use the power.

The prototype was designed by a team in Oxford, England and may be on show room floors next year.   Of course it is anyone’s guess how many of these electric Range Rover will be sold since the price is £95,000 to £125,000 ($174,850 – $230,060).  These prices make the Tesla seem reasonable.

The makers of these new Range Rovers claim that although the initial price for the vehicle is high, car owners will use 80% less power to run than gasoline powered versions.  The owners will also get a tax break by owning the electric Range Rover.

Even in electric form, this Range Rover will have quick acceleration and a high top speed, although the figures for those assertions have not been given.

Don’t confuse these cars with those manufactured by Land Rover.  Land Rover has several different environmental initiatives underway but an all electric vehicle is not one of them.

It is wonderful to see a new car manufacturer striving to improve the environmental impact of its vehicles but pricing the electric Range Rover as high as it has, means the actual environmental impact will be miniscule.
