Early Tube buzz puts pressure on Nokia to deliver
By Erna Mahyuni
Nokia’s anticipated new phone model has gadget media firmly fixed on the rumoured Oct 2 launch date. Will the new model disappoint or will the Finnish phone maker finally have something to get customers excited this year?
Sources have told me that a lot of the ‘leaked’ news that’s out there isn’t fully accurate, so don’t swallow the full buzz on the phone until its actual launch date. After all, no one expected the Tube to be, of all things, a music-centric phone. Most bets were on the new Nokia Xpress Music 5800 (which is supposedly the model name) being a smartphone instead.
So the rumours say that the phone will have Wi-Fi, music capabilities, not to mention a touchscreen yet no multi-touch interface. What is perplexing is these so-called pundits expect Nokia to just churn out a copy of the iPhone, or at least a solid option to choose instead of Samsung’s Omnia or the HTC Touch Diamond. Nokia already has very capable smartphones targeted towards the business user market in the E-Series. If you want a solid and not too pricey option to RIM’s perpetually-in-sight BlackBerries, then why not an E71 instead? Same form factor and you can use it with any network, without it being crippled if you’re not a BlackBerry service subscriber.
But this isn’t about the E71; it’s about the supposed Tube. Likely from the model range it’s in, the phone won’t be up to par specs-wise with the N-Series range. More likely the phone could possibly prove a solid option to Sony Ericsson’s popular Walkman music phones – it’s not a bad space to be, what with the SE line proving to be rather lacklustre lately. The Walkman phones have proven there is a market for music capable phones in the market and if Nokia thinks it should be competing in that space, why not then? Its Xpress Music line has yet to receive the sort of brand recognition the Walkman phone achieved. Perhaps this time around, it’s the Tube’s turn to shine.
