Nokia and Motorola to go Android
T-Mobile and HTC may have been the first to take the plunge into Google’s Android with the G1, but Motorola and Nokia are not far behind. The iPhone could be looking at some serious competition from Android phones in the next year, especially from design savvy Motorola.
HTC has some lovely phones out there, but the company seems to have gone with the clunkier function over form model for the Android G1 they released for T-Mobile. Motorola is known for pretty phones, so maybe they can step up to the plate with their version of the Android phone.
Nokia is not as known for design, however, they are known for video, especially with the Qik-loving N95 line – perhaps they can finally bring video to the table. If so, that may blow iPhone out of the water if they don’t solve that problem also. With the rampant rise of citizen journalism and the general love of being on video, and the ease of apps like Qik to make that happen, there is just no reason for iPhones or Android phones to not be able to record video.
Nokia’s foray into the Android market is as yet still a rumor, however; Motorola’s plans are more concrete. It is reported that they have already hired the first 50 of the planned 350 person unit devoted to creating an Android phone by next year. That’s some good headway for this struggling company.
Since Motorola has always been long on design and short on software functionality, the hope is that this will be the platform that finally gives the company a lasting edge in the mobile market. They certainly haven’t been able to find that lead on their own. Other mobile phone manufacturers already working on Android phones include LG and Samsung.
