Chevy Volt to endure sibling rivalry from Orlando concept?
The Chevy Volt project has enjoyed a golden pillar of support from everyone at GM, but like any company looking to diversify its portfolio, GM is looking to bring the Volt’s technology into other models. Right now the American economy is demanding fuel efficient vehicles that move families and deliver unique fashion statements so GM is shifting its product portfolio to meet the need.
With small families, singles and couples covered by the Chevy Volt, GM is turning its attention to mid-size families with the Orlando concept vehicle, which can transport 7 people at a time. The Orlando is planned as an multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that “. . . explores the potential of combining the versatility attributes of a sport utility, a family van and a wagon in a single execution,” according to GM.
The Orlando has five doors and has “. . . theater-style seating in three rows that comfortably accommodate up to seven occupants. Whenever load carrying becomes a priority, the spacious cabin can be quickly transformed into a large cargo area.”
Though there are some rumors that GM may be shifting its focus away from the Orlando, the company has not yet confirmed that decision.
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is focused on making sure cars like the Chevy Volt and concept Orlando are built in the United States as its members continue to see job cutbacks from GM. Relations between the UAW and GM peaked in 2007 when “. . . the roughly 73,000 General Motors workers represented by the United Auto Workers union went on strike against the company,” according to Wikipedia.
GM’s survival will depend on its ability to quickly adapt as consumer needs shift. Negotiations with the UAW and the sheer size of the company are hampering it’s ability to react, but it’s good to see GM building a new path.

The Orlando is likely to be an E-Flex variation, thus hardly in competition with the Volt.
