SlingCatcher brings TV and Internet programming home
By Dave Jeyes
Sling Media just released its SlingCatcher set-top box as a companion to the Slingbox system that broadcasts your television and web programs over the Internet. Now Slingbox users can easily watch their shows on a laptop, PC mobile device or in any room equipped with a SlingCatcher.
The Slingbox was originally introduced in early 2005 as a way to broadcast your cable or satellite television signal throughout your house. You could also watch programming on any Internet-connected device even when you were away from your phone.
Even though the Slingbox gave digital media enthusiasts full control of where and when they could watch their favorite shows, it had some limitations. Broadcasting programs into a second room required hooking up the TV to a laptop or PC.
The SlingCatcher can receive programming in any room with an Internet connection, and can receive cable, satellite, streaming video or Netflix downloads that are broadcast from a Slingbox. The set-top box also has a USB port so that you can view home videos or pictures on your TV.
Now users will have access to all of the features of a Slingbox from their living room. The SlingCatcher uses the SlingPlayer, SlingProjector and My Media functions to provide access to a wide array of programming.
The Slingbox media system also brings Internet programming onto a television using a simple remote. Users have access to YouTube, Hulu or any number of streaming television and movie sites. It also provides built-in access to Netflix’s download service at the touch of a button.
As online content and distribution channels grow, Slingbox becomes a more valuable tool for managing the programs within the home-theater setting. However, all that ease and control is only seamless as long as you don’t mind buying an extra set-top box to make it work.
