Google tosses Gmail for mobile 2.0 into the cloud
The first version of Gmail for mobile was good, and it brought an easy way to access webmail from a mobile phone that possesses far less horsepower than a computer. But, sometimes it would snag while scrolling and occasionally freeze. Google promises that’s fixed and is putting the mobile web under siege with new and upgraded applications like this.
Speed is always important for users, and especially so when they’re trying to make a stealthy e-mail check while driving or during a meeting. That’s the first thing Gmail for mobile addresses, “You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing,” according to a company blog post.
Switching between Google accounts will be easier now too, which is something the company has addressed with its other online properties as well. Another slick feature is Gmail for mobile 2.0’s ability to compose e-mails while offline. It’s a piece of the whole Google Gears concept brought to mobile devices. You can also recently received messages while offline.
This sort of enhancement is especially timely given the release of T-Mobile’s G1 phone, which intimately links into several Google Apps including Gmail. Users generally like to see ongoing support for the devices they purchase and releasing an update right out of the gate is a good marketing tactic.
