Despite slump, Yahoo! to open new data and call centers

By Michael W. Jones

Yahoo!, much in the news lately on the negative side of the economic story, has at least one bright spot in their financial picture. The company is expected to announce plans today to build a data center, plus a call center, in Nebraska. This is certainly a big deal for people in the Omaha area, and it shows that Yahoo! is  moving ahead with plans for growth.

The recent downturn in the economy has affected Yahoo! just as they have most U.S. companies. Yahoo! share prices have been falling and there have been new rumors concerning Yahoo! as a takeover target for Microsoft and perhaps even Google. To make matters worse, Yahoo! recently announced that it would be laying off additional employees this month, after having started the year by cutting staff by 1,000 people in January. The latest round of layoffs, expected to start this month, are likely to involve from 1,000 to 3,000 additional employees. Yahoo! is also rumored to be cutting budgets for 2009 by fifteen percent across the board.

Amid all this bad news, the Omaha World-Herald is continuing to report that the search and portal giant will break ground soon for a data center in La Vista, NE, an Omaha suburb. This morning, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman said in a press conference that Yahoo! has added a customer care center in West Omaha to its plans. Heineman’s announcement this morning included the following: “In addition to the La Vista data center, I’m pleased to announce that Yahoo will be building a customer care center in west Omaha.”

The data center is expected to be about 150,000 square feet in size, and to employ 40-50 people. Specific plans have not yet been announced about the size and of number of employees at the customer care center. Heineman said that the customer care deal was just finalized yesterday. Because of it central location and favorable long distance rates, Omaha is home to a number of customer service businesses and centers.
