ECOocity, a green store, launches during a recession

By Susan Wilson

ECOocity, a green store, launches during a recession Launching a new store during a recession is risky business, but Microsoft got its start during a recession.  An online store specializing in “green solutions” for your life is hoping to be as lucky as Microsoft.

ECOocity opened to online shoppers yesterday.  So far the store is offering items in five categories: Outdoor/Garden, Electronics, For the Home, Gifts, and Kids.  Currently, the store has a limited number of items, but all of the items are environmentally friendly.

The store is trying to fulfill two goals.  The first goal is to make environmentally friendly items available to a larger consumer base and secondly to provide quality products.

Although the store does offer some products like the solar table that costs $2,199, the majority of the items are under $50.  Up until recently, the $50 price point would have been the sweet spot for many consumers to purchase green products over non-green products.  Now, I’m not sure $50 is going to be low enough for many people.

The store does offer some good bargains for people who are looking to go green in several areas.  For people that want to cut down on the amount of water pollution generated by their laundry, ECOocity offers Eco Laundry Balls for $59.99.  These three balls will do 300 loads of laundry without detergent.  The laundry balls are also refillable and manage to clean clothes by changing the chemistry of the water.  $59.99 for 300 loads of laundry is a good deal.

Another good buy is the  Xtrema 12 Piece CookWare set for $399.  The cookware is stove, broiler, microwave and dishwasher safe.  The set is ceramic and non-reactive meaning that it will not exude heavy metals like nickel or aluminum into the food you are cooking.  Although not the cheapest set of cookware on the market, it is also not the most expensive and may be one of the healthiest.

Hopefully the store will add a little more variety in its choices as it increases its customer base.  That is if the recession doesn’t kill it before ECOocity can get the kinks worked out and find its market.
