While some car dealerships close, others offer a “mobile showroom”

November 11, 2008

While some car dealerships close, others offer a "mobile showroom" Car makers and car dealerships are feeling the downturn in the economy.  GM, Chrysler and Ford have all asked the U. S. government for financial aid, but that doesn’t help car dealerships.

In an attempt to sell cars, at least one dealership is taking a novel approach to cater to customers.  The local Honda dealership here in Western North Carolina has sent the following email to former customers.

At this time of the year, many of us have our schedules tightened even further to make time to spend with those that are important to us.  In order to help make your time as productive as possible, we at Apple Tree Honda and Acura would like to introduce “The Mobile Showroom.”
With time running short in our day to day activities, we at Apple Tree have engineered a program to help make your holiday season easier.  As we all know, most people don’t like to go car shopping.  Most say because it just takes too much time.  In order to help accommodate our clients, we are offering to bring out a car to your place of work or home to fully demonstrate that car or truck at your convenience (hence the name “The Mobile Showroom.”)
This program is available Monday through Friday during the hours of 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.  We can also arrange an overnight evaluation so you can spend a little more time in your next new or pre-owned car to make sure it’s the right one for you.

Clearly, this dealership is trying to separate itself from other car dealerships by providing that extra something to customers and put sales on its ledger.

In these tough times, providing something extra is crucial.  This is the type of service that you would expect someone selling much more expensive cars to provide to elite customers.  Not falling into the elite category, I was surprised to receive an email that offered such door-to-door service.

For businesses that want to survive in these tough times, the easiest way to get customers and keep them coming back is by providing exceptional service.  As layoffs continue to headline the news, businesses are going to have to provide good service with less people.

Offers like the above may actually become more common in the days ahead.

I really can’t see a lot of dealerships doing this. The opportunity for abuse and gaming of the system seem to be many. Unless they’ve perfected some way to better pre-qualify potential buyers???
